According to the ISMPs latest QuarterWatch report, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) tallied 3,292 adverse events and 582 deaths associated with Pradaxa that year. Most of those reports detailed instances of serious internal bleeding, a known Pradaxa side effect for which there is no readily-available antidote.*

Pradaxa Lawsuits

Pradaxa was launched on the market in 2010, and was touted as an improvement over warfarin, a blood thinner that has been in use for decades. According to a recent Bloomberg.com report, Pradaxa has been the subject of regulatory warnings in several countries, mostly due to its association with internal bleeding. While warfarin carries the same risk, internal bleeding that occurs with its use can be quickly staunched with the administration of vitamin K, Bloomberg.com said.**

According to the ISMPs new QuarterWatch report, warfarin was named in the second-highest number of FDA adverse event reports in 2012. However, the agency received only 861 reports of complications in relation to warfarin use, and just 56 deaths.

This is not the first time the ISMP has raised concerns about Pradaxa bleeding side effects. In January, the group reported that data from the FDA indicated that Pradaxa bleeding was 5 times more likely to be fatal compared to warfarin bleeding.***

Court documents indicate that more than 1,660 Pradaxa bleeding lawsuits are currently pending in a multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois. Among other things, these lawsuits allege that Boehringer Ingelheim failed to provide adequate warnings to doctors and patients regarding the lack of a readily available antidote to reverse Pradaxa bleeding.
